The LEGO Group's own number for the shape of a part. It is often moulded into the part itself.
The design ID is the manufacturer's number for a part's shape, regardless of colour. On many parts you can find it moulded into the underside in tiny digits. Combined with a colour it gives an element ID. Catalogue part numbers are often the same as the design ID, and not always.
